What Does This Mean?

It is a question we ask ourselves fairly often in life.  The doctor gives us a diagnosis, we ask, “What does this mean for how I live or what I eat?”  A major change occurs at work and we ask, “What does this mean for the company, for my job, or my continued employment here?”

“What does this mean?” is also a question that Martin Luther used to teach people the basic doctrines of the Bible.  He taught people not just to memorize passages of the Bible or learn the basics of the main teachings summarized in the catechism, but to ask that question, “What does this mean?” so that there was also understanding as to what exactly God was saying in his word.

Over the next two years, we are going to be reading together the Bible in its entirety.  In order to aid us in our understanding of God’s Word, we are going to use that good question, “What does this mean?” to further our understanding and knowledge of God’s Word.  We will learn how to ask ourselves that question “What does this mean?” as we read Scripture and find the answer in God’s Word.  Our goal will be to correctly read and interpret God’s Word so that we accurately understand God’s Word, take to heart all God has done for us, and correctly apply his Word to our lives.
